If Thunderbird is interrupted during the compacting, it will abort, and the temporary file will not be deleted. In the profile folder go to the "Mail" folder and open the "pop.xxx.xx" folder of your POP-account. Delete all popstate-x.dat and popstate-x.dat.msf files.
